African American Heritage Day Parade

The parade will begin at 12th Street and Liberty Avenue, and proceed down Liberty Avenue to the reviewing stand at the corner of Stanwix Street and Liberty Avenue.

This year’s parade is presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and will focus on the 50th Anniversary of Freedom Summer and contributions of blacks in medicine and Western Pa.

Sala Udin who was a Freedom Rider and participated in the voter registration efforts in Mississippi is the Grand Marshall.

At the conclusion of AAHDP, there will activities at three Freedom Trail sites that will last until 4pm. All sites will have identification signage and shuttle service will be available :

  • Highmark Building – Fifth Avenue Place (Stanwix Street and Liberty Avenue)
     (Exhibits featuring contributions of blacks in the field of medicine, health care information and screenings)
  • PNC Legacy Project – 6th Avenue and Liberty Avenue
    (Interactive exhibit that celebrates blacks in Western Pa that have made significant contributions to our community. they will give out water bottles to it’s visitors.)
  • Cultural Trust Peirce Studio featuring Performing Arts
    (Dance, Spoken Word  and musical performances of various types and activities highlighting the upcoming production of the Broadway hit, Motown the Musical)

Parade goers that visit all three Freedom Trail locations will participate indrawing to win two free tickets to Motown the Musical during its run at the Benedum from December 30, 2014 to January 4, 2014.
