WebSlider_MYERS2Pittsburgh made headlines this summer as its prominent role in the global fight against cybercrime was highlighted in both the local and national media. The Steel City has become the Cyber City.

Thanks to unprecedented levels of cooperation between the public and private sectors, Pittsburgh is helping to thwart cyber criminals who are costing the global economy an estimated $400 billion annually.

As the Internet of Things – objects embedded with “smart” technology – continues to grow, so too do the cyber vulnerabilities of both individuals and companies. Criminals are no longer content to simply steal personal data or to wreak digital havoc on businesses.

This summer, hackers demonstrated that they are capable of infiltrating computers that control flight plans, or remotely taking control of an automobile speeding down a busy highway. The opportunities for cyber criminals to disrupt and damage our lives seem limitless.

Who are these cyber criminals? What motivates them? How do they operate? Who or what will they target next? How can they be stopped?
