Handa City Sashiko Program at the Society for Contemporary Craft

Oct 7, 2016 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join the Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania and the Society for Contemporary Craft to learn about the Japanese textile art sashiko. Sashiko is a decorative reinforcement stitch, similar to Western quilting, traditionally with white thread on an indigo background. The presentation will be given by Fumiyo Iwadachi and the hands-on making session will be facilitated by Itsuko Hotta.

Itsuko Hotta was born and raised in Handa City, Aichi, Japan. She started Sashiko in 1978 after she came across a book by a Sashiko artist, named Eiko Yoshida. After a few years of studying by herself, she studied in classes by Asanoha-kai, a Sashiko group in Nagoya. She received a hand craft instructor license in Sashiko in 2001 and has since won the Silver award in the Sashiko category in Creative Handcraft Exhibition in the same year. She had her first exhibition in 2009.

Cost to register is $50.  Register at the Society for Contemporary Craft website.
