Former German leader discusses ISIS with North Hills, North Allegheny students

Sending ground troops into the Middle East to fight the Islamic State, or ISIS, would play into the hands of the terrorist group, a former high-ranking German official told students from North Hills and North Allegheny high schools.

“We will not win this war with ISIS without Muslim support,” Ruprecht Polenz, former chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the German Bundestag, or parliament, said Oct. 3. “This is a war won by public opinion, not by weapons.”

Polenz addressed about 125 North Hills students from its Academy of World Affairs; German Club; and Honors World History and Advanced Placement classes in European history, world history and Spanish. North Allegheny students participated through video conferencing.
